West Shore Parks and Recreation

West Shore Parks and Recreation operates Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre, Bear Mountain Arena and Centennial Centre (A Community Recreation Centre located in Langford) The facilities, programs and staff are governed by a board called the West Shore Parks and Recreation Society consisting of West Shore municipalities and the CRD Electoral Area.

Board representatives from the City of Langford, the City of Colwood, the District of Metchosin, the District of Highlands, and the Town of View Royal, and the CRD Juan de Fuca Electoral Area dictate the use and policies of the West Shore Parks & Recreation an all of its facilities.

As a contributing member of the West Shore Parks and Recreation Society, The City of Langford has Langford City Council members and occasionally citizen members sit on the board. The Society coordinates several areas of joint involvement:

  • Inter-municipal Advisory Committeeon Disability Issues (IACDI) that reviews issues of accessibility within our communities.
  • Collaboration on special events, i.e.: Langford Festival, Christmas in the Park, etc.
  • Joint sponsorship of several programs. For example: Roving Play Park Program, which hosts summer youth programs, and the LIFE Program (Leisure Involvement For Everyone) which is available to West Shore residents to access facilities at discounted rates or for free.

The Juan de Fuca Recreation site is West Shore's premier recreation facility. The site contains Bear Mountain Arena, Juan de Fuca Arena, a swimming pool, weight room, fitness studio, Juan de Fuca Par 3 Nine Hole Golf Course, playing fields, ball diamonds, basketball courts with lights, four greens for lawn bowling, a world class BMX track, private meeting rooms ready for reservation, and much more.

WildPlay West Shore Element Park, a tree-to-tree aerial obstacle course in the Douglas fir canopy, also occupies the site.
