Junior Firefighters

Every little kid at one time or another saw a fire engine roar through the community on its way to a call and said to him or herself, “I want to be a firefighter.”

Some dreams do not have to fade. Become a Junior Firefighter.

Langford Fire Rescue with Belmont High School encourages young people between 16-19 years old to join the Junior Firefighter Program. The program is designed to foster interest in the fire service, promote team work, and practical and written skills.

What do you need to join our team?

  • live in the City of Langford
  • have a valid Class 7 Novice BC licence
  • no criminal charges
  • provide a high school transcript
  • be in good health and physical condition.

Apply

Pick up an application from Langford Station No. 1 (2625 Peatt Road), complete it and return it to the Training Officer Assistant Chief Scott Davidson.

Prospective candidates will receive an interview and, if successful, a physical fitness test.

Training

Each Junior Firefighter is equipped with a set of turnout gear and assigned a gear stall in the station closest to their home.

Each member is expected to attend regular practices, maintaining the department standard of 70%. You have a choice of Thursday evening drill 19:30 to 21:30 or Friday 14:30 to 16:30.

The Junior Firefighter will be enrolled in the Provincial Firefighter Certification Program Level II and learn skills taught during regular practices. Some of the subjects covered during drill include Structural Firefighting, water rescue, rope rescue, motor vehicle extrication, Hazardous Materials (HazMat), wild land fires, and public education.

A member remains on probation during his or her time as a Junior Firefighter. On your 19th birthday you may apply to transfer to be an active volunteer firefighter and then serve a six month probationary period.

Callouts

Junior Firefighters are not issued pagers. Their involvement during incidents is limited to observation at the scene and clean up afterwards.

Activities

Junior Firefighters are encouraged to attend fire department functions such as Langford Volunteer Fire Fighters Association meetings and events, additional training, bike auctions, fire prevention, fundraising, public education and fire department open houses.

You may use the the gym at Station No. 1 (2625 Peatt Road) with permission.
